25 & 26 September

Today's starter was: We have discussed aspects of Roanoke and Jamestown Colonies.  Looking at these two colonies, what does it take for a colony to succeed?

Mr. Peterson finished showing the "Nightmare at Jamestown" video and we handed the questions in - if you missed the video, Mr. Peterson has some makeup work for you.

Mr. Peterson then discussed the starter with you.

We then did a jigsaw learning activity with the Plymouth Colony and the Pilgrims (the Separatists).  We shared what what we learned and then created a dramatic version to present to the class.  Hilarity ensued.

21 & 24 September

It was good to see those of you who were able to come to Parent Teacher Conferences this past week - for those of you were unable to come, but who would still like to talk with me, please feel free to email or visit with me before or after school.

Today's starter:  Describe your worst camping trip.

The starter was to get the students prepared to visualize the struggles that the Jamestown settlers were having here in America.

We turned in our Roanoke theories today.

Mr. Peterson talked about the Virginia Company and its decision to establish Jamestown.  He also talked about the real Pocahontas v. the mythical Pocahontas.

We finished today by viewing a video on the dangers of Jamestown - there were some video questions with the video.

19 & 20 September

The starter for today was: List a few things that people fight or argue about today.

This starter led into Mr. Peterson's discussion about European nations fighting for power in the Americas, and for the discussion of  King Henry's disagreement with the Roman Catholic Church.

The class took notes in this packet.

The class looked at the lost British colony of Roanoke.  Mr. Peterson explained the history behind the colony and its disappearance.  After the discussion, Mr. Peterson assigned a one-page short story assignment.  The class was expected to write their own version of the disappearance of the colonists.  This can be based on fact or on your own opinion of what might have happened.

Mr. Peterson finished class by illustrating where the 13 original British colonies were located.  You will need to know these for the test.

17 & 18 September

The 17th marked the 225th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States of America.

The starter for today was: What information can you find in a constitution?

We took the test on Explorers.  If you missed the test, or would like to re-take the test, come in before or after school or during TEAL Time.

We created our own constitutions in small groups and then looked at the structure of the government under the Constitution.  We also looked at the Bill of Rights.

13 & 14 September

Today's starter was: What do you think is the difference between an explorer and a Conquistador?

Mr. Peterson reviewed how to read the grade printouts that are located on the bulletin board near the door.  Your grades will be updated and posted at least twice a week so that you can keep up-to-date on your grades and continue to be successful in History.

Mr. Peterson then led the class in a discussion of the starter.

We looked at Conquistadors - where they went and what their motivations were.

We then reviewed for the test that will be given next time.

We finished off the day with an Encyclopedia Brown.

11 & 12 September

The starter for today was a blue handout on the Columbian Exchange.  If you were not here, you can get a copy from Mr. Peterson.

I let the class know that the starters that we collected last time (each starter is available in the past entries of this blog), and The First Americans assignment (which was also due last time) went to "0" in Skyward.  I will still accept these for full points, but you need to turn them in!

Mr. Peterson collected the explorer letters that you wrote last time.  These will also go to "0" soon - again, you can turn these in for full points - GET THEM IN!

Today Mr. Peterson and our class looked at a wide variety of animals, fruits, vegetables, other foods, and diseases, and we played a guessing game as to whether they originated in the Old World (Europe, Asia, and Africa) or in the New World (the Americas).

He then taught our class about the Columbian Exchange.
