The vocabulary words for today were: "encounter," and "inflation."
The class looked at the Ohio River Valley and the clash between British and French military forces there.

10 & 11 November
The starter for today was: How does "balance" make life easier?
Mrs. Lindorf had volunteers come and try to balance a marble on a certain part of a racquetball racquet. The trick was that the racqet had to be kept between the participant's knees.
This activity was to help the students understand the importance of balance.
This was used as a segue into The French and Indian War and the rivalries between Britain, France, and other European nations.
The vocabulary words for today were: surveyor, rivalry, militia, and alliance.
We also read an Encyclopedia Brown mystery.

Our starter today was: What does "revolution" mean to you? Name one revolution you know of.
The vocabulary words for today were: enlightenment, great awakening, design, and coverted.
Mrs. Lindorf handed back last term's work - you don't need it, it is just if you want it.
Mrs. Lindorf also reviewed the test that was taken last week If you would like to re-take the test you are more than welcome to. Please study beforehand and come in before or after school or during T.E.A.L. time.
We completed a worksheet on ways that the culture of the colonies was changing and then discussed the changes.

The starter for today was: Why is it important to consider someone innocent until they have been proven guilty?
The starters were turned in today!
After discussing the starter, Mrs. Lindorf introduced the Salem Witch Trials with a short web clip.
We then examined accounts from actual individuals who were accused during the Salem Witch Trials and decided whether they were innocent or guilty, based on the evidence presented.
The vocabulary words for today were pacifist and royal colony.

The starter: If you could thank the Colonists for one freedom you enjoy what would it be and why?

We then looked at a video on the New England colonies and worked with a partner to find the similarities and differences between the colonies. Today we completed page 5 and the New England portion of page 8 in the British Colonies Packet.

The vocabulary words for today were: crusades, astrolabe, mercantilism, and caravel.
We watched a brief introductory video on exploration.
We read about Columbus and his times in the textbook. We finished the day by discussing the Columbian Exchange and completing an assignment on the exchange.

We created a graphic organizer on the reasons for exploration.
We worked on an explorers jig-saw. We divided into groups to research an explorer and then reported back what we learned from each other.

Mrs. Lindorf, our student teacher from Utah Valley University, will be teaching our class from now until the first of November. I will continue to be here helping and observing, but she will be the main classroom teacher.

Today we defined two terms: "expedition" and "navigator." These words will be a part of the assessment at the end of this unit.
